Diversity in Design: Perspectives from the non-Western World addresses the need for a text that encourages evaluation, appreciation, and comparison amongst diverse cultures by incorporating real-world non-Western design traditions into Western context. Each chapter represents a selected non-Western country written by native and resident experts and offers insight into that countrys culture, highlighting the ways in which social and physical influences have affected the development of architecture and design. Contributors native to the featured countries offer insight into design philosophies, theories, principles and elements, symbolism, colors, patterns, and textiles from their regions.

Synopsis

The ongoing challenge for the design practitioner is to consider the changing face of the user-the client-when designing the environment today and in the future. This text fulfills

a huge void that exists in teaching resources on the non-Western cultures and provides a much-needed educational resource so that all educators can teach interior design from an inclusive perspective that acknowledges the contributions of all world cultures, not just western European traditions. Each chapter will represent a selected country and provide information on that country’s culture, design philosophies, theories, principles and elements,

and symbolic meaning evident in built forms, colors, patterns, and textiles, as told by contributors native to that country.

Synopsis

This text provides lecturers with a resource to teach interior design from an inclusive perspective, acknowledging the contributions of all world cultures, rather than just western European traditions.
